Luminous Sea
The modelling and animation of
bioluminescent
organisms was part of my B.A. thesis “Luminous Sea” at the Muthesius University of Arts and Design in 2018. The short animations demonstrate the use of bioluminescence as a so called “burglar alarm”. It is believed that if a predator comes close to a swarm of this species (protperidinium bipes) one organism will warn the one next it through emittance of light. This theory is yet to be proven.
As I only had blurry microscopic images for reference I recall modelling the plankton quite challenging back then.
You’ll find more information on the whole project here.
Technical details: Modelled, textured and rendered in Cinema 4D (standard renderer).
Post effects in After Effects
